Lalibela Rock-Hewn Churches

Known as the “New Jerusalem,” Lalibela is home to 11 medieval rock-hewn churches carved from solid rock in the 12th century. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a major pilgrimage site and a marvel of ancient engineering and craftsmanship.

Axum

As the heart of the ancient Axumite Empire, Axum is famed for its towering obelisks (stelae), believed to date back to the 4th century AD. The city is also traditionally associated with the Ark of the Covenant, which is believed to be housed in the Church of St. Mary of Zion.

Gondar Castles

Often referred to as the “Camelot of Africa,” Gondar boasts an impressive collection of 17th-century castles and palaces built by Emperor Fasilides and his successors. Fasil Ghebbi (the Royal Enclosure) is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
